Whats the point of having an apple tv at all? with dvd players that you can hook up a 500 gig hard drive to for $99 on sale or Take TV or the old fashion burn a dvd, also slingbox anyone???

The point is the NETWORK. Hard drives must be loaded at a computer, moved, attached to a DVD player, watched, detached, unloaded, reloaded. Same with Take TV. Burning disks is a pain in the butt.

I have a DVD player with a USB port - I’ve used it ONCE in my entire life. Moving an external hard drive around is just too much work. Also, most DVD players don’t play H.264-encoded files. Same goes for the Take TV. Burning a Video DVD takes time to encode and wastes disks. Burning H.264 files to a disk doesn’t work eitther because again, DVD players don’t support H.264 - only DIVX.

The only device that can easily allow me to share the same FILE amongst all my devices - iPod with Video, iPhone, computer - and my television is an Apple TV. Rip a DVD once and play anywhere, that’s the goal. In fact, that’s my primary use for the machine. The ability to be able to standarize on one file format. The fact that it rents movies and allows you to listen to and/or watch thousands of free podcasts is an added bonus. Find me a DVD player or Take TV that can do that! I can’t wait to be able to sit down in my chair and watch Diggnation without ever having to touch my computer. Thank you Lord!!!!
