It’s been ten days and already a lot has happened in 2009. I’m now a graduate graduate student at Lewis University. I finally got all the photos from my October 2008 trip to Colorado onto Flickr (ok, actually that was late last year but still…). My employer has changed and now I work for “National City now a part of PNC”. And I finally upgraded this blog to WordPress 2.7.

I plan on writing a longer post on my trip – maybe a bit of a narrative – and of course embed slideshows of the photos I took. I have a lot of raw video to go through as well but I’m waiting for iMovie ’09 to get it all put together. I really want to use some of those cool new map transitions – Indiana Jones style!

My Apple TV finally arrived today. I ordered the 40 GB model which was shipped from China on Friday. From China. On Friday. They tried to deliver it yesterday but I had it going to my work address and we were closed for MLK day. They tried delivering it on Monday. It came from China. On Friday. Now that’s freaking amazing. Anyway, I took the obligatory unboxing photos. There’s a Picasa Web flash embed after the jump. There’s also a video that’s currently encoding on Vimeo – I’ll post the embed for that after the jump as soon as it becomes available. More on my first Apple TV impressions later. Also, I have thoughts on the Macworld 2008 keynote as well…maybe at some point I will have time to type them out.

I never miss a chance to play with someone else’s Javascript, especially when they’re giving it to me free of charge. If you like what you see below (that’s an example of the “cover flow” effect), head on over to the site where I found it: CVI-Projects.

And here’s another cool Javascript effect from the same site – this one simulates those “Web 2.0″-look icons and graphics we all love.

Finally, here’s a great link to a “lab” that allows you to see what all of the available effects can do although I’ve already put my two favorites to use. Best of all, they work in all major browsers and simply don’t show up in browsers that don’t understand the Javascript used. Current and backwards-compatible. You can’t lose!

The trip to the Mall of America was, for the most part, uneventful in that nothing bad happened. In fact, it was rather fun. We stayed at the Ramada Mall of America in Bloomington, MN, which is right across the street from the mall and IKEA. We were also fortunate enough to be chosen as one of the five “Guests of the Night,” which entitled us to a variety of prizes including two reduced all-day passes to The Park at MOA (which used to be called Camp Snoopy and is slowly transforming into Nickelodeon Universe). While there aren’t that many rides, it was very uncrowded on Monday so my sis and I were able to ride most of the rides several times. It was a nice chance for she and I to occupy ourselves while mom did the shopping. That’s not to say that we didn’t shop – I picked up a few things at IKEA, Bow Wow Meow (pet stuff), and made a stop at the Apple Store.

Ah, there’s a story there. On Monday evening, my iPhone suddenly stopped taking photos. First it would crash when I touched the Camera icon, essentially rebooting the device. While seeing the pretty silver Apple logo is nice and all, I really wanted to take photos. After completely shutting down the phone and restarting it, I was able to once again access the camera application but I kept getting an error that basically says “there is not enough room to take more photos. Please delete some and try again.” So, I deleted some. And tried again. And got the same error. Since there was an Apple store at the mall, I thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to visit an Apple Genius for the first time. I went in and waited at the Genius Bar. Unfortunately it was almost 9:30pm which is when the mall closes. The Geniuses didn’t have any more time. So I went to an open MacBook and reserved an appointment for the next morning at 10:30. When I got there at 10:25, there was no evidence of my scheduled appointment. So, I went to the aforementioned MacBook and scheduled another appointment for 10:45. At 10:50am, they called me over and the Genius took a look at my iPhone. The first thing he did was complement my new case and its screen protector (I had bought an iSkin revo the day before). Then he asked if I’d done a full restore recently. I said that I hadn’t and that I was on a trip and away from my home computer. So, he proceeded to do the restore. He did warn me that any pictures or SMS conversations currently on the phone would be erased but somehow I did not connect this to everything being erased. The end of the story is this: the camera now works but I have an empty iPhone. No music, no podcasts, no Safari bookmarks…it’s all gone. I had to manually reenter my Gmail information and a few key contacts. I know it will all be back when I resync. What sucks for me is that I won’t be resyncing until Monday, October 8 when I’ll finally be home. Arggh.Well, I’m off to Oklahoma tomorrow via Kansas City and Southwest Airlines. In the meantime, here are some photos from our trip to the mall.
