Found this on Vimeo, my video sharing site of choice. Great spoof, plus he’s wearing a Daring Fireball t-shirt.

There comes a time when a man must learn to admit when he’s done wrong. And my iPhone is seriously messed up. Almost every time I use the device—whether I’m checking e-mail, using a Web 2.0 app in Safari, or listening to a podcast—I experience some sort of freezing and/or crashing. I’m not sure if this is due to my re-jailbreaking a few weeks back or something I’ve installed since then but I definitely have some sort of issue going on. Typically the problem starts with a consistent crash. When attempting to read e-mail, MobileMail will load and will seem to function normally for a few seconds then suddenly crash. After four or five repetitions of this, the phone while kick back out to the “Slide to unlock…” screen. After unlocking the offending app seems to work all right—for a while. Occasionally the entire OS will freeze necessitating a two-finger reboot (home and sleep/wake button together). At this point I feel my only solution is to restore and re-jailbreak. Again. While liveblogging the whole process. The live updates are after the jump.

Did anyone really believe that I would wait for a non-downgrade jailbreak? Heck no. Maybe that’s not even possible. With that in mind, I tried once again to do the downgrade-to-jailbreak procedure and I was finally successful. My recent Twitter posts will reveal that my primary sticking point was getting the iPhone to kick out of “DFU” mode (whatever that means). My understanding of the process is that putting the phone in “DFU” or recovery mode is something that Apple technicians might use to service the phone. However, using it to install a previous firmware over the current apparently throws an error and leaves the phone in the recovery state without kicking back out to “normal” mode. There is a tool—iNdependece—that supposedly is able to accomplish this mighty feat. Unfortunately, I had no idea how to get this program working, especially since it doesn’t support the “MobileDevice” framework that comes with iTunes 7.5. It was made to work with the framwork included with 7.4.2.

Wow, those Twitter aggregations really provide a slice-of-life, don’t they? At least they fill in the blog nicely—many microblog posts combine to form one macroblog post, right?

In unrelated news, I now have a stock 1.1.2 iPhone albeit not by choice.

I thought the old blog might be getting a little boring with all of those Twitter aggregations posting every day. The nice thing about the Twitter posts is that they encourage me to post on other topics.

Last night I decided it was time to manually update my iPhone to 1.1.2 (iTunes was telling me it wasn’t yet available). I waited because I wanted to make sure that a working jailbreak was available. The update worked and the jailbreak worked—but not without a few moments of panic.

There’s a useful table located on Google’s help pages that explains the relationship between Gmail and what happens when you do certain things on a local client that is hooked in to Gmail via IMAP. One example is that when an e-mail message is “flagged” in an e-mail client (in this case Apple Mail), Gmail interprets this as “starring” the item. Similarly, a message that is “deleted” from a client inbox isn’t really deleted at all—the “inbox” label is simply removed. This may seem weird but there’s a couple ways to get syncing work a little more smoothly. This tips apply to Tiger’s Mail.app but I’d imagine there are similar settings in other mail programs such as Thunderbird and Apple’s own Mail 3.0.

It’s something I vowed to never do. Wait. I vowed never to unlock my iPhone. I never vowed not to jailbreak it. Ok! Guilt trip over! In all honesty, I had very little interest in installing 3rd-party apps on my phone, mostly because of the complicated terminal hackery that seemed to be involved. This all changed with the release of AppSnapp. One click (err, touch) and I had the ability to install almost any 3rd-party app available. Sweet.

I go through the process after the jump along with some thoughts.

I’m getting oh-so-tired of hearing everyone and their uncle complain about how locked down the iPhone is. First unsanctioned 3rd party apps cropped up, then software-based unlocks. Apple broke them with 1.1.1 and they’re back again. As Steve Jobs has already stated, it’s a cat-and-mouse game. But why does it have to be? Why is unlocking the service provider of a cell phone the ultimate tech freedom? I can think of a lot of other tech dreams that are similar in scope to unlocking iPhones but there doesn’t seem to be a big movement out there for any of them but getting iPhones unlocked. And let’s not forget that the U.S. only has one other GSM carrier so it’s not like it opens up a whole world of choice.

The rant continues after the jump….

The trip to the Mall of America was, for the most part, uneventful in that nothing bad happened. In fact, it was rather fun. We stayed at the Ramada Mall of America in Bloomington, MN, which is right across the street from the mall and IKEA. We were also fortunate enough to be chosen as one of the five “Guests of the Night,” which entitled us to a variety of prizes including two reduced all-day passes to The Park at MOA (which used to be called Camp Snoopy and is slowly transforming into Nickelodeon Universe). While there aren’t that many rides, it was very uncrowded on Monday so my sis and I were able to ride most of the rides several times. It was a nice chance for she and I to occupy ourselves while mom did the shopping. That’s not to say that we didn’t shop – I picked up a few things at IKEA, Bow Wow Meow (pet stuff), and made a stop at the Apple Store.

I was at work all day and just realized that the 1.1.1 update is available. From what I’ve read the new features are almost exactly what I’m looking for. I’ve posted some screenshots of the update process after the jump (as if you’ve never upgraded the firmware on an Apple device before).
