It does everything it purports to do and while not as outwardly attractive as its more expensive siblings, it has the same basic features and performs them very well. So, this is actually the first “Western” I’ve ever willingly watched. Sure, I’d been forced through a couple through my schooling but they were mostly the old 50’s-60’s era films that I just don’t seem to have an appreciation for. 3:10 to Yuma, however, is a completely different animal and after watching it twice, I’m still enthralled.
The acting was superb by my plebeian standards. I’m always impressed by Russell Crowe—for me he pretty much can’t mess anything up. He’s eminently believable to the point of forgetting he’s really an Aussie. He also plays bad guys really, really well. So steady, so calming, so good. I was impressed too by Christian Bale. Prior to watching the “making of” featurette, I had no idea how strong his native Welsh accent was. He masks it well and comes across as a typical 19th-century American.
I can’t recommend this film enough to both Western and non-Western fans alike. In the end it’s a touching father-son story but on the way there it’s much more. Rent it now or buy it from Amazon.
